The 26-year-old Tottenham star has opened up about his recent slump in form.
Speaking to Brazilian publication Globo on Wednesday (Nov. 13), he said, “I’m going back to England to see a therapist. I will come back stronger. I’m sure I’ll be in the squad for the next game,” he said, vowing to “have a deep conversation with Tottenham and try to do better.”
“I’m a very happy team player on the pitch. I try to help my teammates. But not everything goes my way. I was disturbed by what was happening off the field. My relationship with someone who was close to me broke down.”
What really happened? “The last five months have been really difficult for me. There were people who only wanted my money, trying to take my property. Now all the bad things are over. I’m at peace. I’m back to focusing on Tottenham and getting back on track.”
He made his debut in the Brazil-Peru match in Lima, Peru, on Sept. 13. It was the second round of South American qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup North and Central America. It was the second consecutive game in which he started, following the first against Bolivia, but finished without a goal or an assist. Brazil won both games.
His last A-match goal came against South Korea in the Round of 16 at the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Since his one goal and one assist in South Korea, he hasn’t recorded a single offensive point in A matches in the last nine months. The psychological strain was evident in his last match against Bolivia, where he broke down in tears on the bench as soon as he was substituted.
The Brazilian striker joined Tottenham from Everton in the summer of 2022. Tottenham spent a whopping £100 million to sign him on a five-year deal and gave him the number 9 shirt. After scoring 53 goals and providing 14 assists in 152 appearances for Everton, it seemed like he was going to blossom at Tottenham. 먹튀검증
Instead, he struggled at Spurs. In 27 English Premier League (EPL) appearances in the 2022-23 season, he managed just one goal and four assists. In terms of minutes played, that’s an average of one attacking point every 200 minutes. Let’s say he can do that in his first year.
This 2023-24 season is no different. He started all four Premier League games and still managed to score zero goals and provide zero assists. With Harry Kane’s recent move to Bayern Munich, he’s been given more chances, but he’s made mistakes in every game. Public opinion of him is only getting worse.
There are plenty of opportunities for him to rebound. Tottenham have games against Sheffield United on the 16th, Arsenal on the 24th, and Liverpool on the 1st of next month. It’s time to see if the player, who has been open about his struggles, can go uphill with his first league goal of the season.
